Testosterone is a hormone carried in the blood. The prostate responds to signals from hormones called androgens, and many prostate cancer cells use these signals to grow. Some treatments slow cancer by lowering testosterone or blocking these signals. Testosterone does not cause all prostate cancers, but it often helps many prostate cancer cells grow. Treatment can reduce these signals, but people may respond differently.
